Needing Input - HST Challenge #2

Yesterday was a great quilting day for me - lots of focus to get projects further along to completion. But I've hit a design decision on Think Outside the Box HST Challenge project #2.

Choice 1

Choice 2

Feeling lucky to find 5" strips of a purple/green fabric in the stash, I've decided to cut them in half to make around a 2 1/2" border. Simple enough decision.

But here's the tough decision: do I just slap those borders on, framing the Notan inspired design to stand on it's own? Choice 1.

Choice 1

Or, do I use some of the few remaining pieces and bring the design into the border, reworking the a few of the light pieces in the corner since the leftovers are too dark? Choice 2.

Choice 2

Unfortunately, hubby and mom are of no help in my decision, as they are not artistically inclined. So I'm asking for your input - which one makes you say 'Ohh!'?

I welcome any and all comments to help with my dilemma. Thanks much and have a great day quilting!

  1. I think choice 2 is more dynamic, while choice 1 is more "well behaved and framed" :) so it depends on what feeling you want to give. I would pick choice 2, but both are beautiful!

  2. For me choice 1! Such a lovely piece.

  3. #2 gives it a little twist and draws you to the quilt more.

  4. Choice 2 is a more "modern" choice - and I really love it when part of the pattern runs off the border as it adds so much more interest to me!!

    1. That's what I thought - a bit more modern.

  5. I really like Choice 2--and makes me wonder where they are coming/going...

    1. Yes - enter/exit points, though it's biased towards the purple fabrics because the pale green doesn't have it's design completed. Hmm, maybe I'll look into adding that.

  6. I vote for choice #1. Those are really pretty.

  7. Both look great. I think No 1 is a more traditional layout but No 2 is more of a modern look. I do feel the top green bit needs one more piece added to make it look finished. This is going to be a great finish.

  8. This is a "think outside the box" challenge, what better way to think outside the literal "box." Choice 2!

  9. Love #2 - to make it even more "outside the box" I might consider extending another square below the border, as in "Tighten the Tension" by Chris Gilman.

  11. I think Choice No. 1 is my favorite, but both are nice! Thanks for linking up for the I May Have a Scrap Problem show-and-tell!

  12. Definitely like the #2 concept.
You could even use a smaller "leak" of the design into the border, by not continuing the light green all the way to the edge. Use some of the border fabric for the other half of the HST so it blends back into the border. (Don't know if I described that well...)
