Love

Ah, February, the month of Valentines, hearts, and love. And that's what I'm bringing today, Love, my new table runner pattern, full of hearts.

letters L, V, E along with a heart to spell LOVE

The inspiration for my Love runner started from working with all of the red scraps for RSC. I've had a red and white heart/love themed quilt rolling around in my head for awhile, which transitioned to the Love table runner, so I could take advantage of the vast selection of heart fabrics that I own. Truly a worthwhile project!

My Love runner is certainly inspired by Valentine's Day, and would make some awesome wall decor too. The 14" x 37" size is perfect to spruce up a table, a cubby, or any spot that needs some love!

Can I say I'm in Love? Not only was this easy to assemble, but also easy to quilt. Stitch-in-the-ditch surrounds the letters, heart, and border strips, while the background is a 1/2" stipple. So as not to detract, I filled the letters with a 1/4" echo line and left the border strips alone so that they would puff up.

The full Love pattern includes all block instructions, the full-sized paper piecing template for the letter V, and the Double Heart block. It really does go together super fast, and is suitable for the confident beginner quilter who is comfortable with paper piecing.

And because I want to spread some love, the Love runner pattern is featured at a special Etsy launch price of $7, now through Monday, February 14. Grab it before it's too late!

Just want the Double Heart block pattern? Then use discount code 'DOUBLEHEART' for 20 percent off just the block, now through Saturday, Feb 5.

Wishing everyone lots of love for a Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Today is the day of love and hearts - Happy Valentine's Day!

Back in January, I shared a post full of free heart patterns from multiple designers, and now it's time for a free heart block from me - an outlined heart. This heart block has an unfinished size of 9" x 12 1/2", and uses the stitch 'n flip method, suitable for confident beginners - let's get started!

Materials for 1 block
1 fat quarter each of red, background, and outline fabric

Cutting for 1 block
Cut the following, labeling each piece.
Outline Fabric:
OA    1 (one) 7″ x 7″ square
OB    2 (two) 2″ x 31/2″ rectangles
OC    2 (two) 2″ x 2″ squares
OD    2 (two) 11/2″ x 61/2″ rectangles

Background:
BA    1 (one) 7″ x 7″ square
BB    2 (two) 11/2″ x 11/2″ squares
BC    2 (two) 3″ x 3″ squares

Red:
HA   1 (one) 5″ x 5″ square

HB    2 (two) 2″ x 5″ rectangles

Block Construction

Make the lower hearts
Mark a diagonal on each 7″ x 7″ background square (BA) and each red 5″ x 5″ square (HA).
Place BA and OA right sides together, stitch a scant 1/4″ on each side of the diagonal line. Cut on line for two HST’s. Trim to 61/2″ x 61/2″. Press.
Place marked HA's on top of OA's, stitch on the line. Trim excess. Press.

Make upper heart units
Mark diagonal lines on 2 (two) outline 2″ x 2″ squares OC.
Place on ends of 2 (two) red 2″ x 5″ rectangles (HB) stitch on line. Trim excess, press to HB.
Lay outline fabric 2″ x 31/2″ rectangles (OB) on the other end of each unit, drawing a diagonal line on each as shown. Stitch on line. Trim excess, press.

Make upper outline units
Mark diagonal lines on 2 (two) background 11/2″ x 11/2″ squares (BB). Place on ends of 2 (two) outline 11/2″ x 61/2″ rectangles (OD), as shown. Stitch on line. Trim excess, press.

Stitch upper heart units to lower heart units, nesting seams, and matching any others. Press seam open.
Add upper outline units to top, pressing seam open.
Stitch both heart halves together, press seam open.

Mark diagonal lines on each 3″ x 3″ background square BC.
Place on upper corners over OB and OD. Stitch on the line. Trim and press for final block.

Who can resist sweet, soft kitties? They're known to be masters of love, and excel at curling their tails around your heart. Goodness knows, it's happened to me several times!

Valentine's Day is fast approaching, and all of my heart table runners - Love Match, Heart to Heart, Sweetheart, and Love Abounds - decorate the dining and living rooms. But something's missing, the sofa is bare. It needs a heart themed lap quilt!

Wrap Up Some Love cat and heart block by QuiltFabrication

Though inspired by all the FREE heart patterns posted last month, I wanted something a bit different. Being a cat lover, I saw this cute line drawing,

which sent me down a road of how to construct it in fabric. After a few sketches on graph paper, sizing pieces to cut, and a lot of stitch 'n flip sewing, a cat/heart block was born. Oh! It happened again - a kitty wrapped around my heart!

With such easy construction, I made a few more kitties, having fun changing the cat and heart fabrics, and waited for the blocks to speak to me. No, they didn't purr or meow, but did give me a setting to work with. All the quilt needed were additional blocks to tie it all together.

Keeping in mind the strong diagonal element going on, the first blocks I made overpowered the cats with too much red. Changing the color placement made the re-worked blocks just right, adding the right amount of spark. I think of them as a combined hug and a kiss!

Add in additional background, and a simple heart pantograph, and these kitties are ready to Wrap Up Some Love!

The Wrap Up Some Love pattern is perfect a Valentine quilt to the confident beginner quilter and above.

Happy Quilting!
