Concession Stand for November Quilt Block Mania

Let's go to shopping! This month's Quilt Block Mania theme is Market/Shop. I took that as buying treats, specifically treats found at a Concession Stand while visiting the beach.

Of course, there are many ways to interpret Market/Shop - just look at all the block offerings this month!

Visit the following designers to download November's free block and please, thank them for their generosity!

Now on to my Concession Stand block. This one is a modification of the Concession Stand block in my Beach Boardwalk quilt. The original is on the left, the modified version, this month's Concession Stand, on the right.

The roof has changed, and there's popcorn available in the new Concession Stand. For one block, grab the necessary fat quarters and little scraps of fabric for applique. The difficulty level for this block is for the confident beginner, who is comfortable working with angles and applique.

Concession Stand is a free download pattern until November 4. In downloading the pattern, you agree to not share the file with others, but direct them to the QuiltFabrication.com/Concession Stand post - thank you! Now go ahead and click on the download button below for the PDF file.

Chocolate Roll for October Quilt Block Mania

Need a little pick-me-up while stitching? Maybe a piece of candy? Then reach for an all time favorite, a Chocolate Roll.

That's right - this month's Quilt Block Mania theme is sweets. Just look at all those choices!

Visit the following designers to download October's free block and thank them for their sweet generosity!

Now, back to my Chocolate Roll block. Looks a lot like a Tootsie Roll, right? And you probably expected me to say 'then reach for a Tootsie Roll' instead of Chocolate Roll. I certainly used a Tootsie Roll as my inspiration, but because of the trademark name, I really can't name my block after Tootsie Rolls. But you can go ahead and call it that!

The Chocolate Roll block is a re-do of one of the candies featured in my Penny Candy block pattern, currently available in my Etsy shop. That pattern also includes fun and creative quilt layout ideas for the candy pieces - the blocks are quite versatile!

Heck, one of those candy pieces made its way in my Halloween Candy table runner. Really, what would the world be without candy???

Luckily, you can make (devour?) as many Chocolate Roll blocks as you want cause they're really easy to assemble. Perfect for the beginning quilter! For one block, grab the necessary fat quarters. To make enough to fill a candy dish, I suggest stocking up on yardage!

Chocolate Roll block is available as part of my Penny Candy block pattern. Feel free to add a border to make it a twelve in finished block as shown for Quilt Block Mania.

Lipstick for August Quilt Block Mania

Accessories! It's all about the accessories!

Yes, that's the August theme for Quilt Block Mania. I've chosen lipstick as a go-to accessory, definitely one that every women carries around, whether to add some color or just help dry lips. My Lipstick block features three colors: red, pink, and dark magenta. Any one of those is sure to please!

Now, accessories means different things to different people, which is why we have quite the range of blocks for this month - have a look!

Download them for free in August by following each designers link, then have fun making your quilt.

My Lipstick block features foundation paper piecing but is simple enough for a confident beginner to learn. There is a bit of pinning required to make sure the black and gold pieces balance correctly, but otherwise, it's a pretty easy block. I even made it up!

The Lipstick block is no longer free but it is available in my Etsy shop - go get your glam on!

Pop Top or Longneck Block for March Quilt Block Mania

Welcome! Make yourself comfortable and feel free to grab a drink - do you prefer a Pop Top or Longneck?

When the theme of 'drinks' came up for this month, I immediately thought of our favorite BBQ party song - Drinking Again by Luke Bryan. In the song, he describes all sorts of reasons for having another drink, with 'pop top and longneck' as part of the song's refrain. To my surprise, this month's creative quilt block designers came up with a wide variety of drinks to satisfy that desire to drink again. Maybe they were channeling the song too. Take a look - there are 27 'drink' themed blocks this month!

And here's the list of the creators behind these refreshing beverages - be sure to thank them for serving up some delicious refreshments this month!

Sew Fresh FPP Block by San Diego Sewn
Cheerwine by Emerald Falls Quilts
Release the Kraken by Art Quilts by Design
But First Coffee by Paleofish Designs
Margarita by Sallys Sewing Circle
Iced Lemonade by Patchwork Breeze

Though Pop Top or Longneck looks complicated, it's really quite easy to put together. The stitch and flip technique is used to advantage, along with straight line seams - it's perfect for the beginner quilter. One could even add some embroidery on the labels. So grab some fat quarters or scraps and get to making your own 12" x 12" finished block!

The free period is over for Pop Top and Longneck, though you can find the pattern in my Etsy Shop.

Quilt Maker for Quilt Block Mania February 2024

This month the Quilt Block Mania theme is 'maker'. And how better to express that than with a quilt block???

For fun, I put Quilt Maker into a 4x6 quilt layout, rotating blocks in each row, to come up with this:

Quite a striking quilt, don't you think?

Of course, that's what you can make with my block. But it may be just as fun to combine with the other 'maker' blocks made by various quilt designers.

Here's where you can find those blocks:

Quilt Maker is so easy to put together - it's perfect for the beginner quilter. A few four-patch blocks and half square triangles (hst's) are all it takes. As usual, fat quarters make one 12" x 12" finished block.

Sorry, the Quilt Maker block is no longer available - it may come back at another time.

Snowy Forest for December Quilt Block Mania

How better to wrap up the year with a Snowy Forest quilt block?

a quilt block with 3 snow covered trees

Thanks to the Quilt Block Mania 'forest' theme this month, I went with snow to make it a perfect block for December.

Take a look at all the other 'forest' themed blocks from my quilt designer friends.

These are free for December 2023. After that, the designers reserve the rights to continue to offer them for free or as a paid pattern. So get them while they last!

Chipmunk by Katie Mae Quilts
Fox by Appliques and More
Heart of Oak by Flowerdog+Co
Snowman by Colette Belt Designs

In order to easily deal with the angles in my Snowy Forest block, foundation piecing is required. It's pretty easy to make the trees and the snow, with 5-6 pieces each. And again, fat quarters and foundation paper are all that's needed to make one block. I just love how the snow banks turned out!

One foundation piecing pattern is included in the Snowy Forest pattern. You'll need to print three, but print as many as you like. Then just follow the numbering and coloring on the templates to make the trees - easy peasy! The finished block measures 12" x 12", a nice size to foundation piece.

The Snowy Forest block is currently unavailable. But feel free to tell others about QuiltFabrication and become a follower yourself through any or all of the following: direct delivery of posts to your inbox (sign up below), or by following on PinterestInstagramFacebook, or YouTube.

Hand Mixer for November Quilt Block Mania

Quilt Block Mania is heading to the kitchen this month in preparation for all the holiday cooking. And a kitchen isn't complete without a Hand Mixer!

When something needs mixing, instead of hauling out the heavy stand mixer, I'll grab my Hand Mixer. It's small size comes in so handy to mash potatoes, whip egg whites, mix a small cake, put together a batch of cookies, etc, etc - the list goes on and on!

Of course, the Hand Mixer isn't the only wonder-tool in the kitchen - take a look at these other kitchen gadgets designed by my fellow quilters.

All of these blocks are free for the month of November. Be sure to thank the designers for their fun kitchen themed blocks!

A little about constructing my Hand Mixer. The block is all applique, requiring 4 color coordinating fat quarters for one block. Use fusible web and a light box to make tracing and placement easier and is perfect for those beginners wanting to try applique!
